Technically wise, this is one of the finest, most polished films I have seen in a long time. The production, set design and blocking are simply outstanding. Something that struck me specifically is how careful they were with continuity!
I'm not going to lie, one of the reasons I wanted to watch this to begin with was because of Deakins. And boy he never disappoints. I really do hope audiences appreciate his masterful camerawork and cinematography as much as I did! Big up for the Editor too, those invisible cuts were very cleverly placed.
This was lit and shot so well that it felt real - too real. Roger is a master of light. There is one sequence just before dawn which had me drooling throughout with how it was shot, you'll know when you see it. But seriously the whole thing from start to finish is gorgeous.
However, where the camerawork & cinematography strive, other aspects of this film lack. The story is explained in the first few minutes of the film, and from there on it's all about the experience. Personally, I also found that at times the score took me out of the immersion and reminded me that I'm watching a movie. Maybe if there was no score at all, and instead only pure sound design this could have been an even scarier ride? Food for thought.
Flawed, but spectacular nonetheless. A technical marvel that will be looked up to for a long time.
An endless nightmare. The kind of film to show ANYONE to really get the meaning of "don't do drugs" across, lmao.
I still don't know if I love or hate it, I have to sleep on it I think. Fucking weird for sure, I know I loved that opening dance sequence! Perfection.
